Why is Nyc called “The Big Apple”?

The Big Apple was initially popularized like a mention of the Nyc by John J. Fitz Gerald in a number of New York Morning Telegraph articles in the 1920s in mention of the Ny horse-racing.

It’s asserted the winning horse got another ny after the race… so all the horses were going to get the Ny.
